This painting is set in the mountains above Banff around the year 1885. I wanted the setting to be in a time just before the full settlement of the area by CP rail and the building of the Banff Springs hotel in 1887. The hotel opened on June 1, 1888 and ushered in vast change to the region. This young man knows changes are coming to his people and to his way of life, but he feels it more distantly when he is up above it all. I've often stood right where he is looking down at the Banff Springs hotel and the golf course and wondered what someone would have felt looking at the same view 100 or more years ago. This painting was my chance to live that imaginary moment.
