This young warrior, stopping to take a drink, is a study in contrast.  We see by his blue Soldier vest and the gun that he holds that he has adapted to the White man technology.  Yet he has chosen to carry his gun sheathed in a brain-tanned hide case with the long fringes favored by his people, he retains the trademark tanned leggings with coup marks evident, and he wears a message in his face paint also in keeping with the age old traditions of his heritage.  Although the obvious message in the title is whether or not the sound that has attracted his attention was caused by a friend or foe,k because of the duality his appearance causes; we may also wonder if the unseen watcher, e they White man or Native, may be asking the same question about him...
