Last name starts with:

  • "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man"

    Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)

Equine artist Kim Penner lives and paints these sentiments, and through her art, strives to share the natural beauty & grace of these incredible animals with her audience.

Kim’s award winning art captures the free spirit of the West and natural splendour. Her work portrays an accurate representation that evokes emotional connection with her subjects.  Kim’s art is collected internationally, and published in numerous equine magazines. She regularly displays at the Calgary Stampede, Spruce Meadows and is exclusively distributed locally by Art Effects.

Presently living in Lacombe, Alberta, Kim spends her days researching, painting, and raising a family. This well accomplished artist was raised in Morden, Manitoba, and graduated from the University of Manitoba with degrees in Fine Arts & Education. The road to her artistic career began early in life, with a great deal of support from her parents, who would enter her renderings in local fairs and art festivals. Further encouragement from teachers and peers, along with a passion for both horses and painting all contributed to Kim Penner's ultimate decision to follow the path that seemed pre-ordained for her.

Penner is passionate about portraying both the natural beauty of horses, and that of the landscapes & environments that these gracious animals occupy, both domestically & in the wild. Research for her paintings takes her far & wide, from the rolling hills of Kentucky, to the breathtaking beauty of the Rocky Mountains. With five horses currently residing at the farm, and a daughter whose equestrian passions match her mothers (she shows her horse from spring to fall), there is never a lack of inspiration for this talented artist!

Kim Penner's work has been enthusiastically received by collectors from around the world. Her paintings have been featured in publications such as Horse & Rider, The Paint Horse Journal , US Art, and the Collector Edition of New York.

Penner was awarded the "Best New Artist" at the 1997 Calgary Exhibition & Stampede Western Art Auction. This was followed by the "Best of Show" in 2003 for "Spirit of the West", again at the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede Western Art Auction.

Kim received "Peoples Choice Award" for "Fall Flowers" at "The Manitoba Art Expo 2005". She received "Best of Show Artist Sales Salon" award at the Calgary Stampede 2006.

  • I think of art as a kind of birth, a constant birth of ideas. For me it comes from observing the best of life, no matter where I may be. At home in my studio, I am surrounded by bookshelves filled with volumes of works by the masters. Influences from every direction are possible. But when I sit down to paint, I must return to one place, the place inside myself where the heart and mind are one, while God moves my hand across the white space.
